From premieres to other events a big social following is all you need
And we’re back, said in full Jimmy Fallon/SNL Morning Zoo voice, for another entry in “Film Journalism is Bad and We’re All Doomed.” If you’re just joining the series it’s where I talk about all the struggles film journalists are facing in a changing world of influencer culture. But today’s article is a teensy bit different, in that today’s topic doesn’t 100% affect journalists but showcases a new breed of celebrity and marketing, and how the two are coinciding.
We’ve talked about influencers attending press junkets in lieu of entertainment journalists already. But in the last few weeks I’ve noticed on social media a host of influencers attending high profile film premieres, most recently those for Wicked and Gladiator II. And unlike the junket discourse, where at least those being invited have connections to the film world, however tangential it may be, this time was different.
